To relate to one another well involves more than learning the skills of good communication. We’ve also tackled other topics ranging from Colin Kaepernick’s Take a Knee protest to mental health to immigration. We must be transformed in ourselves if we hope to have better conversations in our congregations. The conversation was then rolled out across field locations and a national sales meeting. COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS FREEThe conversation tackled topics ranging from the impact of the #MeToo movement across American society, as well as steps we can each take to ensure our workplace is an environment free from harassment. For example, more than 350 people attended a conversation on the #MeToo movement in winter 2018, kicked off by our President of North American Retail and Chief Human Resources Officer. Effectively, genuine and timely courageous conversations, whether they be with a colleague, a direct report, team, or an external stakeholder, can prevent disputes, sustain and strengthen relationships, and generate unexpected new opportunities. Having these difficult conversations means being open to. Courageous conversations are needed more than ever at this highly unpredictable and challenging time. These conversations are courageous because they require being bold, openness to sharing your own experiences, and to hearing the experience of others. Conversation starts with an external keynote speaker followed by an open forum discussion facilitated by trained employee volunteers. Courageous conversations involve intentionally giving space to complex issues of social justice, race, and privilege with people at work. Our Courageous Conversation series, launched in January 2016, gives employees a safe and supportive place to have candid discussions about important issues.
